Geogrid Meaning
A geogrid is geosynthetic material used to reinforce soils and similar materials. The subbases or subsoils beneath roads or structures, as well as retaining walls, are frequently reinforced with geogrids. Soils separate when under tension. Polymer materials like polyester, polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene, or polypropylene are frequently used to create geogrids.
They can be made by weaving or knitting yarns, heat-welding strips of material, or punching holes in sheets of material that are then stretched into a grid. The geogrids are manufactured as rolls of varying sizes and strengths of reinforcement grids. The two materials interlock to produce composite behavior as the soil can enter through the apertures.
Geogrid Applications
For the construction of Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) retaining walls, steep slopes, and other earth-supported and -retaining structures, geogrids have been widely used. Its applications can be found in,
1. Geogrids for Pavements
Applications for geogrid in pavement and roads include subgrade reinforcement, base course, sub-base, and surface courses. When railway ballast is reinforced with geogrids, outward displacement is stopped and settlement is decreased. The stiffer geogrids outperform the more flexible ones in soft subgrade because the latter are more responsive to applied loads.
2. Retaining Wall
In retaining walls, geogrids are used to stabilize the backfill. The friction angle affects how stable an earth retaining wall is. Geogrids in a retaining wall perform differently depending on their creep and stress relaxation properties. High strength geogrids must be placed in the center of the retaining wall, or the spacing between the geogrids for reinforcement must be lowered.
3. Soil Foundation
In foundation work, uniaxial and bi-axial geogrids are frequently employed. The ability of the geogrid and aggregates to interlock is the primary requirement for good stability. Geocell reinforcement does an excellent job of controlling vibration.

4. Slope Stabilization
The slope deformation and stability are the main effects of the geogrid reinforcement. The geogrid’s length has a major impact on bearing capacity. The aperture size should be roughly equal to 0.2 times the footing’s width in order to achieve the best performance. The displacement of the earthen embankments decreases and the safety factor rises as a result of the longer length and higher tensile strength.
5. Structural Elements
The geogrids are used as shear reinforcement and additional reinforcement in structural components. Steel and fibers like polypropylene are used to create strong materials.High ultimate load-bearing capacity, improved energy absorption, decreased slippage, increased shear and bond strength, decreased drying shrinkage, and decreased degradation rate are all benefits of the geogrid reinforcement.
Other than these geogrids are also used for Dewatering Drainage Filtration, Landfill and Environmental Barrier and Surfacing Reinforcement.
